It is with great regret and sorrow that we must notify you of the sudden death of our classmate, Tom Myerchin, on 15 May at his home in Goodlettsville, TN. He is survived by his devoted wife, Barbara LaFollette Myerchin; son and daughter-in-law, Thomas S. Myerchin, Jr. and Cinthya Blanchard of Port St. Lucie, FL; brothers, John and William Myerchin; sister, Catherine Erickson; and numerous nieces and nephews who loved and admired him.
Visitation will be from 3-7 p.m., Sunday, May 20, at the Madison Funeral Home, 219 East Old Hickory Boulevard, Madison, TN 37115. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday, 21 May, at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, 1729 Stop 30 Road, Hendersonville, TN 37075. Interment follows at 1:00 p.m. at Middle Tennessee Veteran’s Cemetery, Pegram, TN.
Condolences may be sent to Barbara at 1032 Maple Court, Goodlettsville, TN 37072-9206.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to Operation Stand Down, 1125 12th Avenue South, Nashville, TN 37203-4709, a non-profit organization assisting Middle Tennessee veterans, especially homeless vets.

MYERCHIN, Thomas Schiller---family man, scholar, soldier, hero---died Tuesday, May 15, 2012 in Goodlettsville, TN. This gracious, caring and generous man was guided throughout his life by a strong and abiding faith. Col. Myerchin, U. S. Army retired, served his country courageously for thirty-one years in the Special Forces: and continued to serve his fellow soldiers through at least five different volunteer groups in Middle Tennessee. Myerchin was the second son of Joe and Laura Myerchin of Grand Forks, North Dakota. He is survived by his devoted wife, Barbara LaFollette Myerchin; son and daughter-in-law, Thomas Schiller Myerchin, Jr. and Cinthya Blanchard of Port St. Lucie, FL; brothers, John and William Myerchin; sister, Catherine Erickson; and numerous nieces and nephews who loved and admired him. THOMAS SCHILLER MYERCHIN

Thomas Schiller Myerchin was born February 5, 1937 in grand Forks, ND, the second son of Joseph Myerchin and Laura Schiller Myerchin. Tom graduated from Grand Forks Central in 1955 and with brother Phil enrolled at the University of North Dakota-studying mining Engineering.

In pursuit of his lifelong dream, Tom was accepted-and attended the U. S. Military Academy at West Point, NY, graduating in 1961 with a degree in Military Engineering. From there he attended basic infantry school at Fort Benning, GA and was then deployed to Panama.

In 1963, Tom married Sandra Savin and they had one son, Thomas Schiller Myerchin, Jr on July 16 1965.

Tom became an airborne ranger and subsequently a member of the Green Berets, the Army's Special Forces. He had multiple tours in Vietnam and received numerous awards for heroism, including the Silver Star, Legion of Merit, five bronze stars, and the Purple Heart.

Tom married Barbara Myerchin on December 11, 1976 at the chapel at Ft. McPherson, Georgia.

Tom's additional education includes both civilian and military training and includes:
* Infantry Office basic and Advanced Course
* Navy College of Command and Staff
* National War College
* Industrial College of the Armed Forces
* Master of Education in Industrial Psychology, Georgia State University
* Master of International Affairs, George Washington University
* Doctorate of Psychology, Georgia State University
* Fellow in National Security, Harvard University

He held a variety of command and staff positions both overseas and in the US. In Panama he commanded both a rifle platoon and an airborne infantry company.

 

 

He served as a detachment commander with the 7th Special Forces Group in the Dominican Republic expedition and later commended a detachment at LocNinh and a Mobile Strike Battalion (Mike Force) with the 5th Special Forces group in Vietnam. While there he was also assigned to the Phoenix Program.

On December 11, 1976, Tom married Barbara LaFollete at the Fort McPherson, Chapel at the installation where Tom was serving as an aide to General Bernard Rogers. Almost immediately Tom was deployed to Korea with Barbara as a camp follower, living in Seoul.

He served as an executive office of the mechanized infantry brigade in Korea. In 1978 Colonel Myerchin assumed commend of the 3rd Mechanized Battalion 19th Infantry, 24th Infantry Division, Fort Steward, Georgia.

Subsequently he held teaching position at the Industrial College of the Armed Forces. For a short time he was the Chief, Leadership and Human Resource division, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff fore Personnel for the Army. For several years he was Chief, Special Operations Division, Office of the Deputy chief of Staff for Operations, US Army and subsequently assumed Duties at Chief, Special Operations Division, Operations Directorate of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

During Tom's Pentagon years, Barbara left the Army Corps of Engineers and returned to the private sector with several Architectural/Engineers firms. She currently directs the engineering office in Washington DC area for Affiliated Engineers.

After Tom left active duty, he worked briefly for Booz Allen Hamilton and then returned to the Pentagon as a civilian for the Department of Defense. Simultaneously, he became an adjunct professor at Marymount University in the Graduate School of Business. After three years with the Department of Defense, Tom was selected as a Senior Executive Service member and became Director of Education and Training for the Internal Revenue Service. At the same time, Tom became a full time faculty member at Marymount University. In 1998, Tom resigned from the US "civilian" workforce, but continued as full time faculty for Marymount University.

During this time frame, Tom founded a small management-consulting firm, Idea Connections of Greater Washington. Although, Tom and Barbara have relocated to Nashville, Tennessee, Tom continues with his consulting practice and as an adjunct professor for Marymount University.

 

BARBARA LAFOLLETTE MYERCHIN

Barbara LaFollette was born on September 6, 1944 in Las Vegas, NM. The majority of her formative years were spent in Nashville, TN. She was an all-city basketball player, and less a scholar.

In 1962 she began he studies at Tennessee Polytechnic Institute, and in 1963 changed her major to Civil Engineering. In 1966 she graduated from Tennessee Technological University with a BS Degree in Civil Engineering.
